“I guessed that,” Baird said absently as his mind raced. She’s seen that? Why? Why her and now?

“You know why.”

I wish I knew more, though.

“Think on.”

He daren’t. Not then. “A lament, you said? Did you recognise it?”

Helena rolled her eyes. “Sadly no. I’m a bit hazy on what a lament is if I’m being honest. It was sort of mournful and made me want to cry. I’ve never heard it before, that I do know, but it seemed—” She broke off and coloured. “Personal, important. But I have no idea why.”

“That’s all about right. I’ll explain later.” Not that he had a clue how that conversation could go. Oh, by the way, it was just a…a what? Vision? Ghost? Something from my past? She’d be entitled to send for the men in white coats or whatever after that! “Any idea what tartan he wore?”

“What?” Helena stared at him with a blank face then total astonishment, which he guessed in the circumstances wasn’t surprising. “Oh yeah, I know all the tartans and of course I could hear him really well because the engine died and the radio went off. Idiot.” She sounded exasperated. “Why not ask something simple like how many beans make five or whatever. Gah.”

Baird made haste to make amends. “Sorry, you’re right, that was daft. I just wondered if you noticed anything about him specifically? It might help us.”

“I told you,” she said impatiently. “Can’t spell it out any clearer. It wasn’t the sort of kilt I’ve seen anyone wear and there was a long bit of cloth over his shoulder. I think. I was a bit distracted trying not to run him over and he didn’t stop to let me study him. Hell, I even wondered if someone was about to restage Culloden. I was thinking what next?”

Who knows? Would it help or make things more confused if he tried to explain? Baird hesitated and decided to err on the side of caution.

“I bet you were,” he said. “Must have been scary stuff. Still, no sign of anyone about now. Someone playing a prank maybe?” The laughter in his head made him wince.

Okay, but what else can I say?

“Point taken.”

He decided to take things in an order he hoped would work. “Er, can you give me a lift back? I flew to your side so fast I forgot things like walking boots and the essentials. It’s a bit far to hike home in flip-flops—jandals, I mean,” he finished in a humorous tone. “And without a sweatshirt.”

“I didn’t think any of it was funny.” Helena raised her eyebrows. “You laughed. What bit do you think is funny?”

“Me trying to remember the vernacular for here,” Baird improvised hurriedly. “When in NZ talk NZ. Could cause problems if not.”

“Too true.” Helena laughed. “I didn’t believe an Aussie mate that one of her local bars had a sign on the door saying no singlets or thongs allowed past this door until she sent me a pic. To me that’s people having to strip off to get in, not that you need a proper top and footwear on before they let you in.
